Infection Control


The Level 2 National Award in Infection Control is aimed at anyone needing to develop the underpinning knowledge of how to control the spread of infection in their workplace or home environment.

This includes giving an increased understanding of the causes of infections, the conditions in which they thrive and the ways that they can be spread. It also covers suitable methods of cleaning and waste disposal that help prevent the spread of infection, along with the personal protective equipment they can use for their own safety.

Key Benefits

Knowledge and skills gained can be mapped over to the Care Certificate – Standard 12.

This can also be used as supportive evidence to map across to joint Skills for Care and Skills for Health Assessment Principles for the Level 2 Diploma in Care (RQF) in England.

Unit 1: Infection Control

Learning Outcomes:

1. Know common diseases and the chain of infection

1.1. List the common diseases to be found in a workplace setting

1.2. Describe the chain of infection

1.3. Identify how infections are spread

1.4. Describe direct and indirect spread

2. Understand standard infection control procedures

2.1. List the standard infection control precautions.

2.2. Identify why standard infection control precautions are used.

2.3. State the reasons for keeping hands clean.

2.4. Identify which PPE should be worn for different risks.

3. Know how to apply standard infection control procedures

3.1. List the steps in correct hand washing techniques.

3.2. Identify the areas of the hand most often missed during hand washing.

3.3. Identify which types of cleansers and soaps should be used for different risks.

3.4. Describe the procedures to be followed regarding jewellery and false nails.

4. Know the correct management of spills

4.1. Identify what would be found in a spill kit.

4.2. Describe how to deal with blood or bloodstained spillages.

4.3. Describe how to correctly handle/manage linen.

5. Know how to manage waste correctly

5.1. Describe the procedures and reasons for checking equipment.

5.2. Identify how to manage different types of waste.

6. Understand roles and responsibilities in preventing infection

How this qualification is assessed

This qualification is assessed through a 30-question multiple-choice question examination. The duration of the examination is 1 hour.

Successful learners must achieve a score of at least 20 out of 30.

A certificate is issued on the successful completion of the course.
